1953 Pontiac Chieftain Sedan Delivery
Affectionately referred to as Scarface
We got this Pontiac in 1992 from a gentleman in Columbia Falls. He had acquired
it from someone in Havre. It had been a service vehicle for a Plumbing and Heating
business there. The sign was still readable through the brushed on paint. It had
spent a few decades on the high line. The chrome was pitted and rusty, but all the
components were there.
It arrived in Three Forks on a trailer and we pulled it into Bozeman where Vince
Arkell put it on a 1979 Nova frame with the Oldsmobile Rocket 350 engine and
transmission. Terry Linquist supplied the front seat from an old Matador. I used it
as a service vehicle while installing heating systems for Suncraft, now Radiant
Engineering.
It was wrecked in 1998, and sat in a barnyard for five years. Then Kelly Tribble
rebuilt the engine, Steve Dahl did the body work and paint. Danny, Shane and Randy
at Three Forks Motor Supply spent many hours helping to make things work
correctly. Erv Entzel in Logan supplied the 1954 taillights, the visor and many
parts to make it look original. Harvey Mack sold me two old Pontiacs that supplied
the door and window parts.
It was a team effort over several years that made the rare and beautiful product
we drive around to take photographs. We have driven it all over the west, and at
times we forget that we are in ‘Scarface’ as we call it because of the pitted hood
ornament. We get a lot of looks and thumbs up from other drivers.
